Kevin Angileri started this website to help fight against obesity, and diabeties.  Kevin himself, was a active individual, who enjoyed playing sports and working out.  Then when he got older, he got caught up in focusing on work, instead of health.  He started to put on weight in his 30’s, and in his 40’s ballooned up to 408 pounds.  Kevin decided to focus on portion control and working out.  With in 6 months, he lost 128 pounds which changed his life.  I have lived this battle, and will continue to fight this battle of weight loss.  I will offer suggestions all the time.  I would also challenge each and everyone of you to go to the doctor and get checked out my a doctor.  Before trying anything, you need to have your doctors approval first.  I hope everyone has a blessed day.

Cons Of Sugar – It Is Not Our Friend

6861897600_f769188629_z

When I was a little boy of 4 or 5, I would sit in the kitchen with my grandfather (Mr. Nick), and have coffee together.  He would put about a 1/3 of a cup of coffee and 1/2 cup of milk.  He then put in about 3 or 4 tablespoons of sugar.  We would sit there and dunk Nonni’s homemade bread in the coffee.  Those were great times for me.  That was the first time, I remember using sugar.  I sure loved that white stuff.  I could not get enough of it.

My mother would make Rhubarb pie and I would watch her toss in a couple of cups of sugar.  And so I grew up with the notion, sugar was good for me.  Heck, Mr. Nick and my mom would not give me anything  that was bad.  Unfortunately, they were wrong.  Most everyone’s parents, during that era, did the same.  Now, here we are addicted to sugars.  Sugar is in almost everything we eat.  Check out the ingredients of everything you buy at the grocery.  It’s there somewhere.  Oh wait, they don’t call it sugar anymore(I wonder why).  Now sugar is called: sucrose-dextrose-high fructose corn syrup-glucose-maltose-lactose.

Because sugar is in so many products on our grocery store shelves, we consume huge amounts of it.  World-wide, the average person consumes 24 kilograms or 53.8 pounds of sugar per year.  That is almost 4 pounds of it each and every month.  There are many cons of sugar, It has been linked to obesity, or fully implicated as a cause in the occurrence of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia, macular degeneration, and tooth decay.

Baby Boomers And Social Security

Baby boomers and social security

It’s 3:00 PM and I have just finished lunch.  The record breaking rain has stopped and the sun is back out again.  It is 82 degrees and 76% humidity, balmy, to say the least.   I have been thinking about, what to write about.  Since most of my friends a “Boomers”, let’s talk about them.  Definition of Baby Boomer: Anyone born between 1946 and 1964, which leaves me out.  But, there were about 76 million people born between those years.

Some are or are about to be on Social Security.  So I thought I would give out some interesting info for those closing in on 65 years of age.  Firstly, congrats on getting to 65.  I went to the Social Security Administration website and found some cool stuff.  Wait till you see this.  According to the Social Security Administration:

A man reaching 65 years of age today, has a life expectancy of 84.3.

A woman reaching 65 years of age today, has a life expectancy of 86.6.

About one out of every four 65-year-olds today will live past age 90, and one out of 10 will live past age 95.

And there is more.

There is a Life Expectancy Calculator.  You put in your gender and age and it tells you, about how long you are going to live, barring falling and breaking your neck or some other life altering incident.  My life expectancy is 86.2.  I should have saved more money for my retirement !!!!!!!

The moral of this article is stay healthy and prepare for a long and happy life.

Addiction To Cigarettes

Hello everyone, I am glad you came back to our site.  For some reason, I woke up at 3:45 this morning.  I decided to sit down and write a few words.  Addictions came to mind, so I would like to tell you about mine.  I have many small ones, but the most devastating to me are smoking.  Maybe, it will strike a note with some of you.  So, lets talk about my addiction to cigarettes.

I have COPD or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.  Sounds kind of scary and, it is.  It is a combination of two illnesses.  Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema.  There are many ways to get it, but primarily, you get it from smoking cigarettes.  I got it from over 50 years of smoking cigarettes.  I think, often, of the cost of my addiction to smoking.  When I first started, cigarettes were on 25 cents a pack.  Now, I pay as much as $7.00 or more, for something that will probably end my life.  I tried to calculate the amount of money, I have spent on this deadly habit, but I cannot.  Probably enough to have quite a large bank account, if I had saved all those dollars.

Of course, the biggest problem, is my inability to stop.  I have tried and tried and failed over and over again.  The longest period of time, I have been off cigs In all these years is 120 days.  And all it took, was one more to get me hooked again.  The very worst part is that I know, is that the next cigarette is going to hurt.  While I am smoking, it hurts.  I guess, that is why, they call it an addiction.  The good news is that I have only 6 cigarettes left in this pack.  I have smoked 3, while writing this.

If you are also addicted, please find a way to quit.  Go on the internet and find a “quit smoking” site.  They are a great help.  They will even send you some medication.  They will send you 1 of 3 type.  Patches, gum or lozenges and they are free.  They assign a coach, to call and help you through the first 60 days.  It is free, so take advantage of their services.  I took the lozenges and they worked for me.  They tasted awful for the first 4 days, but you sorta get used to them and they start tasting good.  That is the time I was off for 120 days.

So today, October 3rd, 2014, I will once again attempt to kick this disgusting addiction to cigarettes habit.  I know, that if I succeed, I can lengthen my life by years.  Wish me luck and I will give you an update on November 1. If you need to talk to someone, just go to the “contact us” button, on the menu.  Jot me a line, and I would gladly give you a call.  (U S A only please)    Good luck.

Baby Boomers And Healthcare – Weight Loss Plan

Importance of Walking a Mile a Day for Your Health

Well, you have hit the magic number.  60  You look in the mirror and say “hey, I’m not the same as I was 40 years ago”.  Oh wow, I’ve put a few pounds on around the middle.  Look….Grey hair.  Back then, I looked a lot like that actor Robert Redford, but not so much anymore.  And then, the often used words appear in your brain.  Hey, I’d better start taking better care of myself, if I want to be around another 25 or 30 years.

Don’t panic, it happens to most of us.  But like most of us, we procrastinate and the years go by quickly.  Soon, you are 65 and then 70 and that is when you think, it is too late.  It is not too late at 70, but much easier at 60.  So whatever age you maybe today, man or woman, today is a good day to start.

Most of us have already had some health issues, so before starting any new regimen, speak with your doctor or other health professional.  They will help you decide on what regimens are good for you.  And if you smoke, now is the perfect time to quit.  It is really tough, but with the resolve you have for a healthier life, now is the time.

Baby Boomers And Health Care: Weight Loss Plan

The two most important subjects, we will discuss are (1) the foods we eat and (2) how much we exercise.  These two things alone, if you did nothing else, would add many more years of healthy living.  If you are like most of us, you have tried dieting and exercising, many times throughout our lives and failed.  Now it’s crunch time folks.  You are never going to be as young as you are today.  Let’s not waste another opportunity to save ourselves from being dependent on others to take care of us.

Here are two tools, I highly recommend.  They will help you in your everyday diet plan.  Download from your computer these two free programs.  Bing Health and Fitness.  Firstly, it will aid you in keeping your daily intake of food and exercise.  2nd is HealthVault.  It has all the foods you will eat and give their values of Protein, Fat and Carbohydrates.  If you download the full version of Bing Health and Fitness, There are great articles to keep you informed and complete exercise programs.

Carbaholics Anonymous would like to say good luck on your new adventure. Remember if your a carbaholic, you should be reading this information. God Bless

Lets start with diet.  To do that, you need to find out your requirement for your daily eating.  How many calories do I need to maintain my weight.  It is important to know that so you can figure out, how much you should eat to lose weight each week.  Go to  Calculator.net  and go to calorie counter.  Fill in your info and find out,how many calories per day to maintain your weight and how many calories to lose two pounds per week.

As an example, lets say you are a man, 60 years of age, 5’10” tall, 225 lbs. and lead a lightly active lifestyle.  You exercise or play some sports one to three times per week.  Here are your stats.

         1.  You would need to eat 2526 calories per day to maintain your weight.

         2.  You would need to eat 2026 calories per day to lose 1 lb. per week.

         3.  You would need to eat 1526 calories per day to lose 2 lbs per week.

It is generally recommended that you do not eat less than 1500 calories per day.  Your body thinks it is starving and will not release the fat.  But, if you do this for 30 days, I feel sure you will be thrilled at your success.

Now let’s talk about protein.  It is so important that you get the necessary protein each day.

To save you the time, 0.8-1.2 grams of protein per pound of body weight is usually the ideal range for most people.  Or, if you want to get down to 180 lbs, you need to get approx. 140 grams of protein.  Fruit and vegetables alone won’t get you 140 grams of protein, so lean meats will aid in getting you there.  If all those foods don’t get you there, then a good protein shake will.

With calories and protein set, we’re still not ready for carbs just yet.  Fat is actually the next most important part of your diet. To save you the time, usually about 25% of your total calorie intake should come from fat in most cases.  These should consist of good fats like olive oil and avocados.  Instead of mayo on a sandwich or salad dressing , try avocado.

With all of that out of the way, we’re finally up to the least important part of our diet… carbs. Surprised how unimportant they are? Don’t be. Calories are the key to controlling our weight, and protein and fat are the only macronutrients that are truly essential to the human body. Good carbs are the answer.  Fresh fruit and vegetables are the key to a successful diet.  Examples of good carbohydrates are:Vegetables  Fruits  Beans  Brown Rice  Oats  Potatoes (sweet, white, etc.) and Various Whole Grains & Whole Grain Products.  These are called complex carbohydrates.

Now comes the part, we all hate to think about.  Exercising.  If you are or have not been a exercise program, you should start slowly and add more as you go along.  Depending on your health condition, I recommend starting on a treadmill.  Treadmills have 2 basic programs.  Weight loss and Cardio.  Start off on the weight loss program.  Try waking for 30 minutes at 2 mph.  This is an excellent starting point and if you can, slowly add time and speed.  You may want to make your 1 month goal, to get to 60 minutes at 2 mph.  Try it every other day or more, if you feel like you can.  If you get tired, you know it is time to stop.

If you have any questions, please go to our “ask a question” page.  We will be happy you, any way we can.  Thanks again for coming to Carbaholicsanonymous.  Tell you friends about us.  We really appreciate it.

Baby Boomer Health Issues

Baby boomer health issues

Wikipedia defines Baby Boomers as those people born between 1946 and 1964.  Seventy-six million American children were born between 1945 and 1964, representing a generation that is significant on account of its size alone. The remaining portion of these 76,000,000 have or will be reaching retirement age.  According to the Press:  70 is the new 65.

So many of these Baby Boomers are now concerned about the economy, cost of health care and their personal health and well-being.  These are all important concerns .  Here at CarbaholicsAnonymous, our focus is on personal health and well-being. Through this article, baby boomer health issues are the main concern for us to discuss.

We grew up in the times of TV, drive-in restaurants, and fast foods.  We felt immortal.  We smoked.  We drank alcohol(sometimes to excess).  We did whatever we wanted with no binds on us.  Now, 50 or 60 years later, we come to the realization, it is time to make some big changes in our daily life.  The good news is that it is not too late to make those big changes.

I was born in 1941, so I am a pre-baby boomer.  2012 was a tough year for me, health wise.  Prostate and Bladder surgery, COPD and a mild heart attack.  I am doing great and thankful for all my blessings.  I had smoked for 57 years, which has been the cause of most of my health issues.  So, I have some practical knowledge of these health problems.

First and foremost.  If you smoke, do whatever is necessary to quit smoking.  It should be your most important priority.  This one step will add years to your life.  And that’s what Carbaholics Anonymous is all about, adding years of good health to your life.  One good way is to contact the nearest “Smokeline”.  They will send you smoke cessation aids.

Next, but just as important as quitting smoking, is a healthy diet.  Check through this site and see plenty of information about nutrition and diet planning.  I recommend an app you can download to your computer that will be a tremendous help in diet planning.  It is the “Bing health and Fitness” application and “Healthvault”.  They are both free.  They are amazing tools to assist in weight-loss programs.

Again Carbaholics Anonymous wants to thank everyone for writing in and requesting us to write about certain topics.  As you all know we are all Carbaholics, and we are trying to win the fight against obesity, and diabetes.  Please help Carbaholics Anonymous become the best free informative website out there.  God bless.. –
