Carbaholics and Tailgate Parties

tailgate

Well, here we are on a typical Sunday in football season.  No matter what your pleasure, it is gonna be a great day.  Some of you will go to your nearest stadium. to watch your favorite team.  Some will stay home and watch the game on their giant big screen TV.  One thing for certain, there will be tailgate parties at either place.

Wow, think of all the food and beverages, that will be at either place.  It can get overwhelming.  Maybe pulled pig, brats, hamburgers, hot dogs, or if you got the big bucks, steak.  Yahoo!!!!!!   There will coffee, sodas and the traditional keg of beer.  I sure envy you guys and gals.  Wait !!!  I forgot about the potato salads and all the other extras, that make football parties as good as they are.

I bet, you are waiting for me , to put the Kabosh, on all your fun.  Nope.  Won’t do it.  Whether you are an office worker, a homemaker, a cop or firefighter, or whatever kind of work you do, you deserve all the fun.  Have a big blowout and I hope, your team, wins today.  It is your day to shout and boo.  Enjoy all of it.

I was just about to start preaching, but no way.  Enjoy and be careful.  Wish I was with you.  Nick

By 2050 Percentage of Americans With Diabetes Will Be 33%

I just finished watching “FED UP” the movie produced by Katie Couric and it was a real awakening.  There is not enough room on this page or even this website to tell you all that is in this movie.  It is a must-see movie for everyone, especially those with children.  Even if your children are in their 30’s or 40’s, ask them to watch it.  The statistic above is scary but I believe to be true.  By 2050 percentage of americans with diabetes will be 33%.  If you are not worried about yourself, protect your children and grandchildren.

I believe, there are 3 main messages in this movie.

1.  It is not our or our children’s fault being obese.

2.  The food industries have seduced us and our children

3   Government, because of giant Lobbies, has not stopped this huge epidemic.

It’s not their fault!!!!.  Our children have been brain-washed from almost birth to eat bad foods.  We, as parents, are also responsible.  We believed almost everything we read and saw in the media.  We gave our children everything they(food industry) said was good for our kids.  They deceived us from the beginning.  It is always easy to blame someone else.  We, the parents and grandparents are also at fault.  We took the easy route.  Instead of cooking good, wholesome food, we let someone else do the work.  It probably all started with TV dinners, to help out the tired working mothers in the 50’s.  Then came the fast food restaurants and we loved them.  Burger, fries and a soft drink under a buck, wow.  They hooked us.

Now that we have them hooked, how do we maximize our profits.  Well, what is cheap and tastes really good?  Sugar!!!  That’s it, we add sugar to everything, and the kids will love it.  then, they hard sold it to us and our kids.  They used all kinds of tricks, clowns and cartoon characters and tigers, sports figures who said this stuff is good for you and your kids.  They lied, they all lied.  Before this time, diabetes was unheard of in children under 12.  By the time you read this, there will be over 70,000 pre-teens with Diabetes.

People ask, why hasn’t the government stepped in to stop this epidemic?  I am not a political wizard, but I do know that our  Congress is dependent on Big Business Lobbies.  Lobbies use all their power to stop any legislation, that will lessen their strength in Washington.  Lobbies are meant to keep Congress in tow.

I wish there was more, I could write.  Quite frankly, I could not even come close to showing all the problems.  But I can tell you this.  There is a solution and it begins with you and me and everyone else.  We, as the caretakers of our children and grandchildren, must learn how do stop this epidemic.  Read.  Study.  Then teach it to you kids.  Help them avoid the terrible consequences of Eating all this sugar-laden food.  Don’t allow your kid to become a statistic.

In conclusion, take the time to watch “FED UP”.  You will be glad you did.

Diabetes & Wine: Does Alcohol Affect Blood Sugar?

Diabetes has become a common problem all over the world. It is a killer disease that affects the eyes, kidneys, bones and the heart as well. Hence as soon as you feel uneasy like extra fatigue or the urge to take more rest, feel weak or lose weight, immediately get the blood tests done to know the root of your ill health.

Does Alcohol Affect Blood Sugar

There are 2 types of Diabetes and for both types alcohol consumption is restricted as the drinks contain sugar content and therefore increase the sugar levels on the one hand and if excess alcohol is consumed sugar level drops down to unexpected levels and may be fatal.  On the other hand. Moderation is the key to good health and if you want to stay fit, control your lifestyle and follow a restricted diet pattern.

Drinking wine in moderation

Yet if you wish to drink wine, you can have it occasionally and that too after consulting your doctor. It is best to avoid that wine, which is sweet for it, has sugar content as well as fat. Both are harmful for a diabetic. But if you reduce the intake of other foods on the day you drink wine, then the chances of increase in blood sugar becomes lesser. Recent researches and analysis regarding diabetes and wine consumption show that moderate consumption of wine helps to keep a check on cardiovascular problems and increases mortality rate especially in type 2 diabetes cases. Controlled habits of drinking wine are not that harmful if you are conscious about your calories and the condition of your health. Red wine is said to have anti-oxidants but it is still to be proved.

The best way to stay healthy and unaffected even after drinking wine is to follow the rules given below:

  1. Go for regular check-ups of your blood sugar.
  2. Consult your physician and take his advice.
  3. Avoid sweet drinks or aerated drinks that contain sugar and do not mix sweetened juices with wine for that will add extra calories.
  4. Maintain diet chart and physical exercises to burn out the extra fats that accumulate on alcohol consumption.

However, if you can stay without wine and other alcoholic beverages, it is best to avoid them completely. If the consumption is more than your capacity, you lose your senses and even tend to eat more as wine works as an appetizer that leads to serious problems. Is there any need to invite problems when you can stay fit and happy for many years even with Diabetes?

Low Carb or Low Fat – Which Diet Plan Works Best?

The debate can go on and on – Is a low-fat diet better or should you stick to a low-carb meal for weight loss? There are pros and cons of both, so you need to base your choice depending upon your body type.
What is a low carb diet?
Whenever we think of low carb diets, the two names that pop into our minds are – Atkins and South Beach. Protein and fat is present aplenty in these, but the content of carbs is zero or trivial. This diet is effective as it produces fast results by helping you lose weight without indulging in any exercise, within a short period of time. A common myth is that low carb diets are said to raise the level of cholesterol but the information is false.
What is low fat diet?
As is evident from the name, this diet lessens the amount of fats. You can eat fruits, vegetables, and other nutrients barring foods with high fat content. To ensure that you lose weight and maintain a normal level of blood sugar, you need to eat foods with a low amount of glucose.

Low Carb or Low Fat?

If you opt for a low carb diet, you will be able to consume only small amounts of food because proteins and fats are high on calories. You might feel hungry at odd times due to this reason. On the contrary, you can eat more fruits and vegetables if they have a low glycemic index, in the case of a low fat diet. This means you won’t face the problem of feeling hunger pangs often. Low carb diets work quick, which is why a lot of people who want instant results opt for it. Long term results are same in both cases if you maintain your diet. Abandoning the diet might lead to disastrous effects, especially when you are on a low carb diet – you can gain back all the weight you had lost very quickly. Some weight gain is possible in the case of a low fat diet too.
Carbs are needed by the human body like other nutrients, and low carb diets tend to reduce the carb content a lot. Physicians usually don’t recommend the low carb for this reason. However, you can’t really reduce the intake of foods with fat drastically because the body requires it in a certain quantity as well.
Ideally, you should strike a balance between the two kinds of diets because maintaining one is somewhat of an extreme approach. You should also indulge in exercising while cutting down on calories.
