Baby Boomers And Healthcare – Weight Loss Plan

Importance of Walking a Mile a Day for Your Health

Well, you have hit the magic number.  60  You look in the mirror and say “hey, I’m not the same as I was 40 years ago”.  Oh wow, I’ve put a few pounds on around the middle.  Look….Grey hair.  Back then, I looked a lot like that actor Robert Redford, but not so much anymore.  And then, the often used words appear in your brain.  Hey, I’d better start taking better care of myself, if I want to be around another 25 or 30 years.

Don’t panic, it happens to most of us.  But like most of us, we procrastinate and the years go by quickly.  Soon, you are 65 and then 70 and that is when you think, it is too late.  It is not too late at 70, but much easier at 60.  So whatever age you maybe today, man or woman, today is a good day to start.

Most of us have already had some health issues, so before starting any new regimen, speak with your doctor or other health professional.  They will help you decide on what regimens are good for you.  And if you smoke, now is the perfect time to quit.  It is really tough, but with the resolve you have for a healthier life, now is the time.

Baby Boomers And Health Care: Weight Loss Plan

The two most important subjects, we will discuss are (1) the foods we eat and (2) how much we exercise.  These two things alone, if you did nothing else, would add many more years of healthy living.  If you are like most of us, you have tried dieting and exercising, many times throughout our lives and failed.  Now it’s crunch time folks.  You are never going to be as young as you are today.  Let’s not waste another opportunity to save ourselves from being dependent on others to take care of us.

Here are two tools, I highly recommend.  They will help you in your everyday diet plan.  Download from your computer these two free programs.  Bing Health and Fitness.  Firstly, it will aid you in keeping your daily intake of food and exercise.  2nd is HealthVault.  It has all the foods you will eat and give their values of Protein, Fat and Carbohydrates.  If you download the full version of Bing Health and Fitness, There are great articles to keep you informed and complete exercise programs.

Carbaholics Anonymous would like to say good luck on your new adventure. Remember if your a carbaholic, you should be reading this information. God Bless

Lets start with diet.  To do that, you need to find out your requirement for your daily eating.  How many calories do I need to maintain my weight.  It is important to know that so you can figure out, how much you should eat to lose weight each week.  Go to  Calculator.net  and go to calorie counter.  Fill in your info and find out,how many calories per day to maintain your weight and how many calories to lose two pounds per week.

As an example, lets say you are a man, 60 years of age, 5’10” tall, 225 lbs. and lead a lightly active lifestyle.  You exercise or play some sports one to three times per week.  Here are your stats.

         1.  You would need to eat 2526 calories per day to maintain your weight.

         2.  You would need to eat 2026 calories per day to lose 1 lb. per week.

         3.  You would need to eat 1526 calories per day to lose 2 lbs per week.

It is generally recommended that you do not eat less than 1500 calories per day.  Your body thinks it is starving and will not release the fat.  But, if you do this for 30 days, I feel sure you will be thrilled at your success.

Now let’s talk about protein.  It is so important that you get the necessary protein each day.

To save you the time, 0.8-1.2 grams of protein per pound of body weight is usually the ideal range for most people.  Or, if you want to get down to 180 lbs, you need to get approx. 140 grams of protein.  Fruit and vegetables alone won’t get you 140 grams of protein, so lean meats will aid in getting you there.  If all those foods don’t get you there, then a good protein shake will.

With calories and protein set, we’re still not ready for carbs just yet.  Fat is actually the next most important part of your diet. To save you the time, usually about 25% of your total calorie intake should come from fat in most cases.  These should consist of good fats like olive oil and avocados.  Instead of mayo on a sandwich or salad dressing , try avocado.

With all of that out of the way, we’re finally up to the least important part of our diet… carbs. Surprised how unimportant they are? Don’t be. Calories are the key to controlling our weight, and protein and fat are the only macronutrients that are truly essential to the human body. Good carbs are the answer.  Fresh fruit and vegetables are the key to a successful diet.  Examples of good carbohydrates are:Vegetables  Fruits  Beans  Brown Rice  Oats  Potatoes (sweet, white, etc.) and Various Whole Grains & Whole Grain Products.  These are called complex carbohydrates.

Now comes the part, we all hate to think about.  Exercising.  If you are or have not been a exercise program, you should start slowly and add more as you go along.  Depending on your health condition, I recommend starting on a treadmill.  Treadmills have 2 basic programs.  Weight loss and Cardio.  Start off on the weight loss program.  Try waking for 30 minutes at 2 mph.  This is an excellent starting point and if you can, slowly add time and speed.  You may want to make your 1 month goal, to get to 60 minutes at 2 mph.  Try it every other day or more, if you feel like you can.  If you get tired, you know it is time to stop.

If you have any questions, please go to our “ask a question” page.  We will be happy you, any way we can.  Thanks again for coming to Carbaholicsanonymous.  Tell you friends about us.  We really appreciate it.

How Many Grams Of Carbs In A Day Should I Eat Everyday?

how much carbs should you eat everyday
One of the most common questions Carbaholics Anonymous gets asked is how many grams of carbs in a day is necessary for healthy living.

Not surprising , because carbs are pretty much always the nutrient that people are most often confused by these days.  All of this talk about good carbs and bad carbs, simple and complex, the glycemic index and the various low carb diets and low carb foods is enough to drive a person crazy.

Let’s figure out exactly how many grams of carbs you should eat per day to lose weight or build muscle, and cover what types of food sources they should come from.

How Many Carbs Per Day?

Let’s start with the biggest question first… how many grams of carbs should you actually eat per day? Answering this question is actually easy once you understand a few simple facts about how the rest of your diet should ideally be set up.

What I mean is, before we can figure out your daily carb intake, we need to take 3 other steps first. Let me show you what I mean…

Step 1: Figure Out Calories

Whether you want to lose weight, build muscle or do anything similar, every diet plan starts with calories. They are always the #1 key to making your body do what you want it to do, so they are always the first thing that needs to be figured out.  Go to   www.calculator.net    and calculate the amount of calories needed to maintain or lose weight.

Step 2: Figure Out Protein

Once your calorie intake is all figured out, you then need to figure out how many grams of protein you should eat per day.  Because protein is the next most important part of every diet plan.

To save you the time, 0.8-1.2 grams of protein per pound of body weight is usually the ideal range for most people.

Step 3: Figure Out Fat

With calories and protein set, we’re still not ready for carbs just yet.  Fat is actually the next most important part of your diet. To save you the time, usually about 25% of your total calorie intake should come from fat in most cases.

Step 4: And Now We Can Figure Out Carbs

With all of that out of the way, we’re finally up to the least important part of our diet… carbs. Surprised how unimportant they are? Don’t be. Calories are the key to controlling our weight, and protein and fat are the only macronutrients that are truly essential to the human body. Carbs on the other hand are not. We should definitely eat a sufficient amount of them each day, but they are no where near as important as calories, protein or fat.

So, how many grams of carbs should you eat per day? Simple. Carbs should be used to fill in whatever amount of calories are still left over after protein and fat have been factored into your diet.

Let me show you an example…

  1. Let’s pretend you calculated that you need to eat 2000 calories per day to lose weight or build muscle or whatever your goal is.
  2. Next let’s pretend you figured out that you need to eat 150 grams of protein per day. Since 1 gram of protein contains 4 calories, that means 600 of this example person’s daily calories will come from protein.
  3. Next, since 25% of your calories should come from fat, this example person can calculate that 500 of their 2000 daily calories will come from fat.
  4. So that’s 600 from protein plus 500 from fat which gives this person 1100 calories accounted for so far. Now they’d just subtract 1100 from their 2000 total and get 900 calories. Since 1 gram of carbs contains 4 calories, this example person can see that they should eat 225 grams of carbs per day.

And that’s why the 3 other steps needed to come before carbs. We needed to figure out calories, protein and fat in order to figure out how many carbs we should eat per day.

Once again keep in mind that the amounts used in the example above were just made up examples. You’d obviously need to use the amounts that are specific to you.

What Sources Of Carbs Should I Eat?

Now that you know how many grams of carbs you should eat per day, you also probably want to know which foods you should get these carbs from.

For the most part, people trying to lose weight, build muscle or just be healthy should get the majority of their daily carb intake from higher quality nutrient-dense sources as opposed to simple, high glycemic, processed crap. Some ideal examples include…

  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Beans
  • Brown Rice
  • Oats
  • Potatoes (sweet, white, etc.)
  • Various Whole Grains & Whole Grain Products

Foods high in sugar (candy, cookies, cereals, soda, etc.) should be avoided most of the time, and typical refined sources of carbs like white bread, white rice and white pasta should usually be limited to some extent in favor of the foods on the list above.

Now, the reason for avoiding or limiting these types of carbs is NOT because they make you fat. That’s a myth. The type of food you eat is NEVER what makes you fat. Eating too many total calories is the only thing that does that. It doesn’t matter where those calories come from (protein, fat, carbs) or how  healthy or unhealthy (or “good” or “bad”) they are. Too much of anything will cause fat to be gained just the same.

Instead, the reason for avoiding/limiting these types of carbs is mostly for the purpose of controlling hunger and choosing better sources that are higher in various important nutrients, which is crucial for overall health.

Kevin Angileri Says Helpful Advice For Managing Your Diabetes Effectively

Kevin Angileri Helpful

Kevin Angileri Says The diagnosis of diabetes can seem quite scary at first but as you learn more, you realize that it can be managed. You don’t have to change your entire life. You can make adjustments and take better care of yourself but that is a good thing to do anyway. This article can help you develop the right attitude about diabetes and you.

30 Day Challenge

Kevin Angileri Says For people with diabetes, it is important to check your glucose level after heavy exercise. Exercise can keep consuming glucose for up to 24 hours later, so it’s best to check your glucose level every 45 minutes or so after your workout to see if your glucose level is dropping or remaining stable.

Kevin Angileri Says If you have Diabetes then alcohol is not your friend. Alcoholic drinks are full of sugar and that will not help your blood sugar levels. A glass of wine has more sugar than hard liquor and beer will has less sugar than wine but more than liquor.

Kevin Angileri Says When you’re planning to go to a doctor’s visit, write down any concerns you have. It doesn’t matter how outlandish they may seem, it’s much easier to read them off a page (or PDA or tablet, whatever works for you) than trying to remember them. Every bit of information you gain will help you keep your health in check!

Kevin Angileri Says Read labels on the foods you buy to determine which foods are likely to cause your sugar to spike. While it’s easy to see in unprocessed foods where the sugar or other ingredients are, it’s not so simple with processed or packaged food. Read the labels and avoid items that have been known to interact with your sugar.

Kevin Angileri Says If you feel someone is giving you unwelcome advice about diabetes, ask them to back off. If you do it politely they won’t be offended, and you won’t have to listen to them rattle on about things you either don’t care about or already know. If you have the knowledge to back it up then you’ll become the master of your domain!

Kevin Angileri Says People who eat at least two servings of dairy a day are less likely to develop insulin resistance, even if they’re significantly over weight. Even if you’re already Diabetic, including lots of low-fat dairy in your diet will help you to keep your blood sugar levels under control all day.

Kevin Angileri Says Think about what you drink. Diabetics need to be careful of everything they ingest, so don’t forget to monitor the nutrition data and ingredients on the items your drinking. Juice, for example, is very high in sugar, so you should drink it in moderation. Milk can be high in fat, so stick to skim.

If you’re looking for a fitness class to help you lose weight to deal with your Diabetes, try the hospital! They often offer aerobics classes for people with various issues, like seniors or the morbidly obese, or regular fitness classes through outreach programs. Ask your doctor to find out if these are available to you or apply directly.

It is important that you know how to use your insulin pump. Many people do not get the proper amount of insulin because they are not using their pump correctly. If you do not know what you are doing, do not feel ashamed to ask your doctor or another health professional, for help.

Try buying food at local farmer’s markets or at the farm itself to get discounts on healthy foods. A diet for Diabetes doesn’t have to be expensive, you just have to look for deals and sometimes shop in different locations. Eating farm fresh eggs for the first time will make you a believer!

Kevin Angileri Says Gestational diabetes can be a dangerous complication of pregnancy. It causes high blood sugar and can affect your health as well as your baby’s. Luckily, gestational diabetes can be controlled by a healthy diet, exercise, and sometimes medication. It usually resolves itself after the baby is born.

Kevin Angileri Says If you have a family history of heart disease, strokes or hardened arteries, you should be especially vigilant in controlling your blood glucose levels. Well-maintained levels can delay the onset of these and other medical conditions, and can also decrease your odds of developing these diseases as you get older.

Kevin Angileri Says Be sure you have a bedtime snack. This will help to make sure you have enough glucose to get you through the night and that your glucose is stable while you sleep. It will also help to make sure you don’t feel the need to get up at night and raid your fridge.

Kevin Angileri Says Try to avoid soda and other sugary drinks of you have diabetes. There are no health benefits from drinking these drinks and can in fact, cause your sugar levels to go higher. If you are going to drink juice, try to stick to ones that have no sugar in them.

Kevin Angileri Says Educate your family on what to do if your blood sugar drops or spikes to dangerous levels. A diabetic has to battle their disease with the help of family and friends, so ensure they know the symptoms to keep watch for in case you end up in a situation where you can’t control it yourself.

Kevin Angileri Says Anyone with diabetes must exercise to stay in good health. Exercise helps strengthen the cardiovascular system and helps to increase the circulation to the arms and legs. It also helps to control blood sugar levels. The best forms of exercise for someone with diabetes is jogging, swimming, walking, and rowing.

Kevin Angileri Says if you have diabetes, you should try to cut out alcohol or talk to your doctor if you can not. Alcohol can cause low blood sugar, which is called hypoglycemia. The effects can be very hard to predict with different people. Doctors will allow some people to have a drink or two with proper management, but it is best to avoid alcohol altogether.

Kevin Angileri Says As stated earlier, diabetes doesn’t have to be a horrible way to live. It can actually lead to a better life because you are taking care of yourself. You just eat healthier and exercise a bit which are all things you should do anyway. By taking heed of the information in this article, you can have a winning attitude towards diabetes.

Who Are Carboholics

Who are carboholics

Who are Carboholics?  That is a great question.

Here are a few examples: The mid twenties athlete with a great 6 pack.  He works out about 5 days a week and eats like a bird.

The middle aged man, who doesn’t watch his weight and loves fast food, and exercises his fingers on the channel changer.

The elderly folks, who are just taking it easy, and eating steak and mashed potatoes loaded w/gravy and a lot of salt. And then, there is me, who has eaten at every fast food joint in the country and loved every bit of it.

The truth is: We are all Carboholics.  We need carbohydrates to survive.  They are building blocks to good health.  Trouble is that we add all the wrong  things to them.  You know what I’m talking about.  We load them up with butter, salt, sugar, sour cream and dozens of other things.  That’s what plays havoc with our health and waistline. Let’s have some fun and change the way we eat our carbs.  We will substitute good carbs for bad carbs.  A couple of things will happen.  First, you will start to feel amazing and secondly  you will change a couple of holes in you belt.

Please remember Carbaholics Anonymous is trying to get to everyone’s emails in a timely manner.  We still want to encourage everyone to still email us with questions.  Carbaholics Anonymous wants to fight obesity, and fight diabetes.  One person who we look up to is Brett Michael.  Brett Michael is not only fighting his own battle, but his childs battle too.  So please tell your friends and family about our site.  God Bless.
