Healthy Holiday Eating Plans For Thanksgiving & Christmas

Healthy Holiday Eating Plans For Thanksgiving And Christmas.

Update 01/13/15.  I hope all the Holidays went well for all of you.  It was a great Holiday season for me.  Congrats to those, who maintained or even lost weight.  Unfortunately, I did fall off the wagon, the last two weeks of December.  It was so difficult to pass up on all the goodies.  I did not gain a lot of weight, but my body sure felt the difference.  If the same happened to you, just get back on track.  I have been loading up on veggies and avoiding as much bad stuff as possible.  I am completely off sodas (both w/sugar and sugar free and caffeine free).  Good luck on 2015.  Eat healthy to stay healthy.

Update for Thanksgiving.

I hope everyone had a wonderful day.  I certainly did.  I trust, you all enjoyed all the great food.  As for me, I did follow my own plan, and did not overdo it.  One dinner plate full of great food and most of it was really healthy.  No seconds, which even surprised me.  I did have one glitch.  A second (small) piece of apple pie.  I was on a guilt trip for at least 5 minutes.  If you did eat more than you thought, you should have, don’t fret about it.  It is over and done with, and now we can look forward to Christmas dinner.  You have almost 4 weeks to prepare.  Good luck to all of us.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

There is not any question about it.  For all of us, who are either trying to lose weight or maintain self-control over our blood sugar, November and December are the toughest months of the year.  Can’t you just picture, in your mind, what those tables will look like?  Sweet potato casserole with marshmallows, mashed potatoes and gravy, Green bean casserole with bacon, mac and cheese and list is endless.  Then. after all that, out come the pies and cakes and all the rest.  This will be a test of your fortitude and inner strength.  You can do it.  Remember, David killed Goliath, Rocky beat Apollo and the Roadrunner beat Wiley Coyote, and you can win too.  I might have stepped over the line, with Roadrunner, but I was going for the laugh.

Healthy Holiday Eating Plans

Well, stop worrying, make a healthy holiday eating plan & a course of action for these two holiday seasons.  There are so many things, you can do, to prepare.  The goal here is, that on January first 2015, you will be about the same weight or (with great planning) a bit less.  You have about three weeks for planning and about five weeks to execute.

Over the next three weeks, you can get mentally prepared.  You can try to lose an extra two or three pounds before Thanksgiving.  Here are a few tips that may make for an easier holiday season.

On Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve an Christmas day, drink plenty of water.  First for hydration and water will fill you up.

Let’s not kid ourselves, we want to try all that great food.  So instead of torturing ourselves, let’s try a little of everything.  One full size dinner plate should do it.  Fill that dish up with a little of everything including salad.  Little tastes of everything you love.  Oh, wait a minute !!  One level please, not five or six inches high.  We are building a perfect holiday dinner plate, not the Empire State Building.   Good job, you can be proud of yourself.

Now it is dessert time.  OMG, now what do we do?   Cakes and pies and ice cream and every concoction know to man, of things made of sugar.  Even I am having a hard time dealing with dessert.  A little common sense will come in handy.  Grab a small salad or dessert plate, for starters.  Take a few deep breathes and choose wisely.  Half the plate will do fine and one layer high.

I hope, we all succeed in maintaining our weight and blood sugar.

Elmo’s Health tips for the week: Tip 8 Update 01/13/2015

In his video, Elmo asked that you change one thing each week.  And Elmo thinks, that just maybe, those changes will turn into good habits.  Elmo said to me, maybe these changes will help all boys and girls and even maybe their moms and dads.  “Hey all you boys and girls and moms and dads, please try to make these positive changes”.  They will make you feel all better.  Talk to you soon, and remember, Elmo loves you.  xoxoxoxxo

Health Tip 1. Stay hydrated.  Drink lots of water.  Eight to ten 12oz. glasses for adults and eight to ten 10 oz glasses for children.  Remember sodas and coffee don’t count, just plain water.  Try drinking a glass of water before and during dinner.  If plain water gets a bit boring, try adding a slice of fruit for taste.  Lemon, orange, strawberry, cucumber or even a slice of peach will liven up the taste.

Tip 2.  Halloween is over and you have probably finished eating all the bounty, you collected from your neighbors.  If there is some candy left, toss it in the garbage.  Elmo says tip 2 is no candy for 1 whole week.  That’s right, that is our goal for this week.  Moms and dads, that includes you too.  You have to show your kids, by good example.  So, the whole family can work together, and look at all the money you will save.  So, make Elmo proud and remember, Elmo loves you.  xoxoxoxo

Tip 3.  The most popular drinks in the world are sodas.  Unfortunately, sodas, either with sugar or sugar substitutes are the worst things to drinks.  They contain numerous chemicals, that are not good for the human body.  Become a label reader.  So, for one week, no sodas.  If you can do it for a week, do it for another week and then another.  Hopefully, you will never drink sodas again. Please read an article on this site called “Sugar is not our friend”.  And watch the short video at the end of the article.

Good day everyone, I hope these Health tips have helped you.  I hope, they have turned into better eating habits.  That is the purpose of these tips.  Changing bad eating to good eating.  Changes don’t happen overnight, so stay at it.

Tip 4.  For at least one week, instead of your normal breakfast of bacon and eggs etc., replace breakfast with a healthy Smoothie.  Easy and quick to prepare.  There are many Smoothie recipes, so they never get boring.  Elmo recommends this easy recipe.

1 cup of whey protein

1 Protein shake

1 Banana

1 cup of fresh or frozen fruit.  Blueberries, Strawberries, or any fruit you like best.

1 cup of ice

This is a very simple Smoothie and you can change the fruit to suit your taste.

It will give that boost in protein , you need to start your day.  Enjoy and remember, Elmo loves you.  xoxoxox

Tip 5.  Well, tomorrow is the big day.  Thanksgiving.  A day, we all wait for.  Family and friends being together.  The best of foods sitting on a beautifully decorated table.  Oh, the temptations are enormous.  You are going to do fine.  With a little self control, you will enjoy most everything in moderation.  Drink a glass of water before dinner is served.  Portion control is the answer.  Fill one dinner plate with a little of everything and eat slowly.  Give you brain time, to figure out, you are full.  Seconds?  If you must, go for the green.  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Tip 6.  Elmo says, this is a good week to give up breads,  All kinds of breads, white, multi-grain, pita, emglish muffins Whole wheat etc.  Eat nothing made of flower.  Gosh, we the people on this planet love bread.  I thought, I could not live without bread, but we can,  All breads go through so much processing and they take out, all the best parts, like the bran.  Bread is useless, except as a filler.  If you are having a sandwich, wrap it in a lettuce leaf.  I enjoy beef on occasion and I like “in and out burger”, animal style.  I get it well done, no sauce, lots of onions and a lettuce leaf wrap.  Really, quite good.  So that is this weeks challenge.  No bread products whatsoever.  Do your best and remember, Elmo loves you.

12/03/2014

If you have been following Elmo’s tips, you are on your way to a more healthful living and might be feeling better, than you have in the past.  Hopefully, some of his tips have turned in habits.  Keep up the good work.  If you have fallen off the wagon, get back on.  We all have setbacks.  Don’t quit.

Tip 7.  Do the 10 day sugar challenge.  For the next 10 days, eat nothing with added sugar.  Be a “label reader”.  On the list of ingredients, if it has added sugar, do not eat it.  Learn the other names of sugar on the labels…high fructose corn syrup, maltose, dextrose etc.  The grocery store sells thousands of products and most are processed foods with added sugar of one name or another.  Be aware of all these foods.  The best place to find healthy foods without added sugars is your produce department.  You will never see a label on fruits or vegetables that say added sugars or high fructose corn syrup.  Your produce department is your pharmacy, that supplies you with all the nutrients you will need to heal your body.  Good luck over the next 10 days and hopefully longer.  xoxoxox  from Elmo.

Tip 8.  FYI, Elmo put a few pounds on over the Holidays and so he is embarking on an easy exercise program.  It is a simple one and he hopes that you will join in.  Elmo asks that you start walking everyday.  Start off slowly and try for at least 1/2 mile per day.  It should not take any longer than 15 minutes.  Get that blood circulating through your veins.  If you can, try extending it to 3/4 of a mile.  The goal here is to get moving.  Walking is the easiest exercise and you need no equipment.  Elmo says after a month of walking, you will most likely want to continue and even extend the distance and shorten the time it takes.  Log your distance and times and you will see, how much easier it get after a while.  And remember….Elmo loves you.

Taking Responsibility For Your Health

I don’t know why, we are so concerned about our health.  Whatever is wrong with us, our doctors can fix.  They have a myriad of drugs that cure any and all diseases.  I know people, who have three or four and even five different illnesses and the doctor is taking care of all of them.  The Diabetes doctor gives us Insulin by pill or injection.  The heart doctor gives us cholesterol medication or blood thinners, etc.  The cancer doctors give us Chemotherapy and Radiation.  The Arthritis doctor gives us steroids and Cortisone.  These medical professionals have cures for all diseases.  If you firmly believe that, then your next doctor visit should be to a Head doctor.  It is just not happening.  Doctors mostly treat symptoms of diseases.

You are one of the most perfect organisms in the world.  Your body and brain are perfect.  Your body has the ability to heal itself.  You have an immune system that cannot fail.  All you have to do, is nurture your body and brain, so that it can do the job that it was intended to do.  That job is to keep you have a healthy and long life.  Everything is there inside your body.  Your brain, heart, liver, kidneys, lungs and all the other parts of the human anatomy.  They are all there to help you live the wonderful life you deserve.

Taking Responsibility For Your Health

Unfortunately, we don’t know how to nurture our own body, properly.  It seems that we are too busy doing other things, rather than learn how to let our fantastic self,  fix our ailments.  We will attend schools for 20 or 25 years to learn how to earn wealth.  We will work for another 40 years to attain wealth and be able to retire.  Most of us will not spend any time learning how to be and stay healthy.  Now at the time, when we should be enjoying the fruits of our labor, we are gravely ill with one or more debilitating diseases.  Who would have thought?  It was us, who did not think.

It is just to easy to go out for fast food.  Too easy to not exercise.  Too easy to not get enough rest.  Too easy to not exercise our brain.   So now, we are in bad health.  The good news is that we can reverse our bad health and start getting healthier.  It is not “too late”.  Let me say that again.  It is not “too late”.

I am not talking about “fad diets” or crazy exercise programs.  Your body can cure itself.  You just have to feed it the right foods.  Now, before I go any further, I must say this.  Your doctor is your first line of defense.  Before you start any new form of diet or exercise, you must consult with him.  He should be consulted before you change diet and exercise or stopping any medication you are presenting taking.

The next step is taking responsibility for your health, your brain and body.  Read and learn all you can about your disease or illness.  Educate yourself in the many ways. you can nurture your body with food.  Learn about the foods, you should not be eating.  Processed foods, sugars, fast foods and sodas.  Water, water and more water.  A great deal of your body is made up of water. and you need to replenish that lost water every single day.

Get as much information as you can.  Let me recommend several good documentaries.

Forks over knives

Fat Sick and nearly Dead

Hungry for Change

Vegucated

Fed Up

These movies will give you a lot of insight on what you are eating and what you should not be eating.

Can you remember, while you were growing up, you heard these phrases?  “You are what you eat”   “Eat to live, not live to eat”   “All you really have in this world is your health”   As you reach maturity, you will realize, how true these sayings are.   It is not too late for you to regain good health.  Today is a great day to start.

Moral: Be More Responsible About Your Health.

Good luck and God bless all of us. Kevin Angileri

The Quest for Wellness

Dealing with diabetes

Welcome back to CarbaholicsAnonymous.  We appreciate your loyalty to this site.

Whether you are here about weight loss or Diabetes, we try to keep you up on the latest information, to help you gain Wellness.

The Dictionary Definition Of Wellness:

The dictionary has 2 definitions for “Wellness”.

1. the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort.

2. an approach to healthcare that emphasizes preventing illness and prolonging life, as opposed to emphasizing treating diseases.

Our goal is to aid you in achieving both definitions of Wellness, in an easy format.  Not a lot of medical jargon.  So, lets start with definition 1.

The key words, in definition 1 , are “deliberate effort”.  Read and learn as much as you can about any ailment, you may have.  Knowledge is Power.  The more you know about your ailment, the easier, it will become, to overcome it.  Most ailments can be overcome and cured.  It gets confusing at times, at times.  For instance, if you are on a quest for weight loss. there are hundreds, if not, thousands of weight loss diets.  Which one to choose?  If you are very overweight (50 pounds or more), first consult your doctor.  Because he or she knows your particular situation, and can direct you to a particular diet or even send you to a certified dietician.

Definition 2.  Yours and everyone’s goal is preventing illness and prolonging our lives.  It is exciting to see healthy people in their 90”s.  This is achievable to all of us.  It just take a little work and perseverance.  It is not magic.  The keys are being careful of what we eat and getting off our duffs and a bit of exercise.  It is a matter of developing new and better habits.  Many years ago, a friend said to me, there are 2 kinds of people in this world.  “Those, who live that eat to live and those, who live to eat”.  I was the latter.  Now, I try to “eat to live”.  Think hard about that.  Which are you?  Make the change, it is the most important thing, you can do.  Let your doctor treat your ailment, and give him all the help you can, by doing your part.

Here is the most difficult part of all of this.  Procrastination.  We have been living our lives so long, it is difficult and we say “Ok, I will start next week or Jan.1 of next year”.  Don’t procrastinate one more day.  Today is a great day to begin your quest for wellness.  Maybe, if you are strong and change some bad eating habits, by Jan 1, you will see some wonderful results.  It does not take a long time to get results.  I was going to say “Good luck”, but it is not a matter of luck.  Instead, “Good wellness”.

Addicted To Food? Here Are Important Points To Know

Addicted To Food?

Do you ever feel like eating unhealthy foods isn’t a choice?  Do you sometimes feel powerless, like you eat them without much conscious thought? Or perhaps you know you’re eating foods you should not be, but yet, you just cannot seem to stop yourself no matter how hard you try?

Food addiction is a very real thing and something that gets overlooked far too often. If you are not aware of what’s happening in your mind and body when you eat these foods, it may easy to get yourself down over it, chalking it up to you having no will power to stick to a diet plan.

But, it’s much more than that.  If you are currently suffering from food addiction, it’s going to take some hard work to break free, but the great news is that with the right approach, you can definitely do so.

Let’s go over what you must know about food addiction.

The Cause Of Food Addiction

So what causes food addiction in the first place? If you think it’s simply the fact that your taste buds have a strong preference for sweet or salty foods, you’re not quite correct in that thinking pattern.

While there’s no doubt that your personal preferences on taste do play a role in the foods you choose, there are other responses going on when you eat certain types of foods.

The most problematic perhaps is consumption of carbohydrates – namely simple carbohydrates. This includes foods like cake, cookies, ice cream, crackers, granola bars, cereals, bagels – basically anything that is not wholesome and coming straight from nature.

Essentially, all the foods you should be aiming to avoid.

When you eat these foods, they do two things.  First, they spike blood glucose levels.  This initially makes you feel very good as you suddenly have a high surge of energy going through your body. Who doesn’t love that?

But more importantly, these simple carbohydrates also cause a high release of the neurotransmitter in the body called serotonin, which has extremely strong impacts on your overall well-being.

It makes you feel calm, relaxed, and at peace.  It helps to reduce stress and can even help you feel closer to others.  To put this into perspective, this is the same neurotransmitter that is released during hard drug use.  It is that powerful – and that addictive.  There’s no question how addictive hard drugs can be. Well, carbohydrates can actually have a similar effect.  You aren’t getting addicted to the carbohydrate itself, but rather, the feeling that those carbohydrates create in your body due to the response you get.

Why do you think so many people turn to ice cream, cake, and cookies when they are highly stressed out? It is this response that’s soothing them – not just the sweet taste these foods offer.

The bad news however is after you get this initial high from these foods, you are also going to crash, feeling worse than before.  Especially as your blood glucose level comes crashing down, you are going to feel irritable, lacking energy, and your overall mood will also take a tumble. So while you found relief, it was only temporary and now, you have just worsened the situation.

Not to mention the fact that with this spike than crash of blood glucose, your pancreas will be working overtime, releasing insulin to control all that sugar, and eventually leading you to a higher risk of developing diabetes.

Those who put their body through this on a regular basis – sugar highs and then lows will also be at a much greater risk of diabetes, heart disease, and obesity due to the excess weight that will accumulate.

Even more is the fact that upon reaching this blood sugar low, now your body is going to want to prompt you to consume more simple sugar in order to bring it back up again, a cycle that just continually perpetuates itself.

Getting Help

So if you find yourself in a situation of food addiction, how can you get past it? How can break free so that you are not longer controlled by your food and carbohydrate cravings?

First, realize that it isn’t going to be easy. Accepting this is key to ongoing success.  You are going to feel miserable for the first while and you will have to push through those feelings. Just like a drug addict goes through withdrawal, so will you.

Mentally preparing for this will help get you ready. Just remember that with each day you stay sugar/simple carb free, it will get easier.  Eventually those strong cravings will subside.

Next, turn to your family and close friends for support.  Explain to them what you’re doing so they are also prepared to support you through those difficult times.  Talking to them instead of reaching for that cookie jar will keep you on track.

Sometimes the simple distraction of another person can be enough to help you stay on track and prevent a slip-up.

Finally, make sure that you enlist the help of a personal trainer who has assisted others with this same problem you are now going through. A personal trainer will be a great ally to help you work through realistic goals to achieve as far as both your diet and workouts go.  They’ll also be able to give you nutritional tips to help you avoid feeling so fatigued so you don’t need to reach for simple carbs as often as you have in the past. A great phoenix personal trainer who also does online personal training is Seth Thurston. He has helped 1000+ just like you get control of their weight and reach their dream body by developing a healthy lifestyle.

If you’ve set yourself up a proper diet plan, you’ll find it far easier to break free from the food cravings you have because you are constantly fueled with nutrient dense foods.  Lack of a proper nutrition program is what gets many people in this situation in the first place, therefore taking steps to resolve this is a good place to begin.

So next time you feel like food is calling your name and you are too weak to disobey, keep these facts in mind. Something stronger than just willpower is at work here, but with conscious effort and the right protocol, you can overcome this problem.
